Chondroitin
WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS?
When cartilage becomes worn, exposed bones can rub together and the painful symptoms of osteoarthritis may appear. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, including those throughout the spine. Actions of chondroitin include promotion and maintenance of the structure and function of cartilage, pain relief of osteoarthritis in joints and anti-inflammatory activity.
WHAT IS CHONDROITIN
C hondroitin sulfate is a substance found naturally in the body. Chondroitin sulfate is part of a large protein molecule (proteoglycans) that gives cartilage elasticity.
Chondroitin sulfate is a larger molecule also found in cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate has been studied much less extensively, but early results show that it also seems to work as an anti-inflammatory and reduces pain. Some laboratory studies suggest that chondroitin sulfate may slow cartilage breakdown associated with osteoarthritis and even spur cartilage growth
PRECAUTIONS
Because of insufficient safety data, children, pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid using this product. Because of the theoretical possibility that it may have antithrombotic activity, those taking warfarin and those with hemophilia should exercise caution in its use. Those who need to restrict their salt intake should, if they use chondroitin sulfate, use salt-free preparations.
ARE THERE ANY ADVERSE REACTIONS?
Side effects that have been reported are mostly of the mild gastrointestinal variety, such as epigastric distress, nausea and diarrhea. No sulfa-allergic reactions or other allergic reactions have yet been reported.
More studies need to be done to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the supplements. Be sure to contact your doctor if you notice any unusual or new symptoms while you are taking them.
